This may seem like a strange position, but it's easily reached, safe (middle of the car) near the battery (behind passenger's seat) so battery leads are kept short. And it makes fitting the dash easier as there are no big battery leads floating around behind there! 

Dash trial fitting

Dash coming together. It all needs to come apart to varnish the dash (it is a 1960s car don't forget!)
